Grey Skies, Good Plans: Saving a Wet Day in Hisarönü

Hisarönü sells itself on sunshine, and most days it delivers. But the Turkish coast isn’t a desert, and every so often the sky has a bit of a fuss. Cloud rolls in, the odd shower passes through, and the pool looks less inviting than the café next door. The good news? One grey day won’t ruin your holiday unless you let it. The better news? With a bit of planning, it can be one of the nicest days of the trip.

First, Read the Forecast Like a Local

A rain icon on your phone is not a verdict. On this coast, forecasts often show a high chance of rain and then deliver twenty minutes of drizzle followed by bright skies. Check the hourly view rather than the daily summary, and look at a radar app such as Windy or the Turkish state forecast. If the rain is coming in short bands, you can often work around it. If it’s a solid block of thunder and lightning, believe it and change plans.

The key distinction is between “annoying drizzle” and “proper weather”. Drizzle means a café, a museum and a light jacket. Proper weather means no boat trips, no paragliding and no standing on an exposed beach. In 2026, most Hisarönü hotels and cafés have decent Wi-Fi, so checking the radar over breakfast is easy. Do it before you leave the room, not after you’ve walked to the dolmuş stop.

The Covered-Market Myth

A lot of holiday advice says “go to the market if it rains”. That’s only half true. Fethiye’s famous Tuesday market is largely open to the sky, and a wet market is a miserable market: dripping canvas, slippery aisles and stallholders who’d rather be anywhere else. Hisarönü’s own Sunday market is also an outdoor affair. If the rain is heavy, skip it.

What you want instead is a covered shopping area or a proper indoor attraction. Fethiye has covered arcades and passages around the centre where you can browse without getting soaked, and the fish market area is under cover, though it’s more about eating than shopping. Treat the market as a fair-weather option, not a rainy-day rescue plan.

Cafés Worth Lingering In

The Hisarönü strip gets a lot of stick for being touristy, but on a wet day it comes into its own. Find a café with a proper covered terrace, order a Turkish coffee and a slice of something syrupy, and watch the rain do its thing. The pace slows down, the staff have time to chat, and you remember that holidays aren’t only about doing things.

If you want a change of scene, head into Fethiye’s old town around Paspatur. The lanes are narrow and atmospheric when wet, and there are plenty of little places to duck into. A long Turkish breakfast is a brilliant rainy-day move: by the time you’ve worked through the cheeses, olives, eggs and endless tea, the sky has often cleared. Look for a café with a backgammon board and no rush to turn tables.

Indoor Fethiye: Museum, Hamam and a Very Good Bakery

Fethiye Museum is small but genuinely interesting, with finds from ancient Telmessos and the surrounding area. It won’t fill a whole day, but it’s a solid hour and a half and it’s indoors. Pair it with a wander through the covered parts of town and a stop at a bakery for warm gözleme or börek.

Then there’s the hamam. A Turkish bath is a classic bad-weather activity: steamy, warm and thoroughly relaxing. Hisarönü and Fethiye both have options, from simple local baths to more polished spa experiences. Book ahead if it’s a wet day, because everyone else has the same idea. A scrub, a foam wash and a lie-down afterwards can turn a gloomy afternoon into a highlight.

Pivoting a Boat Trip or Beach Day Without Losing Money

This is where people get stung. If you’ve booked a boat trip and the weather turns, contact the operator first thing in the morning. Most reputable companies will cancel if conditions are unsafe and offer a refund or a rebooking. Some will run anyway in light rain, and that can actually be atmospheric, but you need to know what you’re signing up for. Ask directly: “Are we going, and if not, what’s the refund policy?”

Don’t simply not show up. No-shows usually mean no refund. If you’ve booked through a hotel or agent, go through them. And if you’ve paid by card, keep the paperwork. Travel insurance may help in extreme cases, but it won’t cover “I changed my mind because it looked a bit grey”.

For a beach day, the pivot is simple: swap the sand for a covered pool, a spa or a long lunch. Çalış Beach in the rain is not fun, and neither is a remote cove with no shelter. Save the beach for tomorrow.

What to Skip

Skip paragliding if there’s any hint of thunder or strong wind. Skip open-top boat trips in heavy rain. Skip Saklıkent Gorge in a downpour, because flash flooding is a real risk. And skip the market in a proper storm. None of these are worth proving a point to the weather.

A Sample Wet-Day Timetable

Start with a slow breakfast at the hotel or a local café. Around 10.30, take the dolmuş into Fethiye. Do the museum first, then lunch somewhere covered. In the afternoon, book a hamam or find a café with a sofa and a good view of the rain. By 5pm, head back to Hisarönü, have a nap, and go out for dinner as normal. It’s not a wasted day; it’s a different day.

The Honest Bit

One wet day is fine. Two is a pattern, and that’s when you need a proper plan: a day trip to a city, a spa afternoon, or a long lunch with friends. Pack a light waterproof layer even in summer, and don’t let a grey sky convince you the holiday is over. Hisarönü in the rain is still Hisarönü: green hills, good food and the sea somewhere in the background. You just need a brolly and a better plan.
